Spoil your footsies April 6, 2011

Having been raised in Australia, I was bound to the culture of thongs (flip flops, not g strings;P) the beach and fish n chips. When I was young I had a problem with my feet I always sprained my ankle when walking so I needed those foot padding things that go in shoes and I hated it, so from a very young age I would wear thongs or open toed shoes, after 10 or so years, when I would need to wear closed shoes my toes would just ache with pain they would get red and so irritated so I would dread when I would need to wear anything closed for sports or long walks up hills etc.

Nicole Richie looking cute as in her converse shoes

Anyway long story short it’s been 25 years since I have purchased a pair of sneakers voluntarily  but because it was getting harder and harder for me to wear anything but thongs I decided to invest in a pair of converse shoes and this is something I recommend for everyone!! They are so freakin comfortable! Even though they are slightly pricey, I feel like they are a perfect alternative for people who have the same problem as me. It’s also a great look celebrities can pull off and look effortlessly chic and cute, don’t hate me but it seriously peeves me when socialites and celebrities like Kim K wear nothing but Christian Louboutin’s, (we get it you’re rich, snob).

I tend to pair them with jeans /shorts and a casual t shirt but I am sure there are many other ways to wear them, ( I don’t think I can pull off a pair of Chuck Taylor’s with a dress like M. Cyrus!) and since I’m new to wearing sneakers if any of you fashionistas have any other suggestions on how to wear them let me know that’d be great!

Nudes all the rage March 9, 2011

So I’ve wanted to blog about this since I got back from Australia but there was always something else on my mind. While I was back home, I noticed an overwhelming fashion trend and that is everything nude, for those who don’t know what I mean I am referring to really sweet soft romantic tones from white beige and soft pinks, from day wear to night time attire, from shoes to bags and everything in between.

One reason why I believe it was such an overwhelmingly beautiful trend in Australia is because of a store called Forever New, you can say that all the “IT” girls shop at, as their style is up to date, shabby chic and sexy without going over the top. Mind you, forever new only opened it’s doors in 2006 in Melbourne and now operates more than 100 stores internationally, so that may be why this trend hasn’t hit Kuwait yet, or if it ever will, but this trend is one that I am just crazy about. When I went back home I actually did 70% of my shopping there!

I did notice this trend in Hollywood over the awards season, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Jo Hanson and Hally Steinfeld just to name a few were embracing this romantic trend and I feel it just makes a woman look so classy and effortless!

On NYE I went to a party thrown by Fashion TV and the theme was “A White Party” so everyone had to dress in light breezy colors and ofcourse the guys would either go all out and wear white from head to toe or do what many guys did and wear jeans with a white shirt white shoes and a funky little hat to top off the outfit (I must say he did me proud that night, looking smashing!) I got a dress from Forever New and gorgeous pink/beige pumps for the night which I am in love with. Everyone looked amazing that night, it was a sea of white and really allowed that fashion to come alive. I really hope that this trend comes to Kuwait hopefully over the summer, it is simply too cute a trend to miss out on!

AU vs KW. What do U think? December 9, 2010

Hi all!

Sorry it’s been a while I’ve been insanely busy I just arrived in Australia for a family visit! It’s December now which means summer, but I am NOT impressed with the weather:( It’s a nice cool breeze which most people love but I’m here for the gorgeous beaches and lazy days at the park, booo! Anyway, I’m here for another 5 weeks so hopefully summer will arrive soon.

Now for all those who have been or live in Kuwait, may agree with me when I say the ladies can be really over the top when it comes to fashion, but they do keep up with the latest trends, but having been here in Australia, I’ve noticed that people aren’t really up to date, it’s not that there aren’t amazzzing fashion musts available, but I think the overly relaxed atmosphere that comes with being in Australia over shadows the fact that sometimes, putting in a little bit of effort can really go a long way in lifting a persons spirit. I’am talking about the girls fashion sense more than the guys, since guys here are always in board shorts and surfer t shirts which looks neat and cool, but some of the girls I see at the shops are wearing these overly tight short shorts and extremely low cut blouses with this hideous  hairstyle I call the “skunk look”. They dye their hair black and then a huge streak of blonde just underneath, it looks disastrous!

Having lived in both countries, I can see why Kuwait and Australia are different when it comes to style, and don’t get me wrong, I am not a fan of either, but I think the fact that girls in AU don’t bother putting in effort when they go shopping (they go all out for clubbing tho!!) is because here, there are taxes, 9 to 5 jobs, uni, life is generally a bit more difficult and there are no maids to go out to do their grocery shopping so life is busy and more stressful, a vast difference to the lifestyle most have in Kuwait.

I really love the laid back feeling of OZ, but sometimes I wish girls could put a little more effort to look good because it will lift their spirit even if they don’t think so, and Australia has some incredible bargains! So there is no excuse about cost, and I do wish that some girls could take it down a notch in Kuwait and not dress like their going to a party at 10am.

Gotta have it! December 1, 2010

E!s fashion police

For all those who have OSN, and I’m sure any chick that already does, watches E! & the Style network. Both channels air the show “fashion police” starring Joan Rivers and in one of their episodes they were showing one of the latest trends, coloured shoes.

Now, for some reason this seems to be a trend that not everyone is in love with and I don’t get it! It’s just gorgeous! Since the shoes must be bright (not neon!) and colourful I will obviously suggest wearing a single coloured or a nude coloured dress. The thing I adore about this trend is how cost affective it can be. There is no need to wander the malls looking for a colourful trendy funky dress, and instead invest in a pair (s) of fabulous heels with any boring dress you have hanging in your wardrobe and instantly set the trend! Like those on fashion police, investing in a pair of heels or flats is never a waste because unlike our dress size, our shoe size will never change:D

Given, some people really don’t know how to pull this look off and I don’t know how you can get this wrong, I was

Fabulousness

surprised to see SJP get it wrong, she’s like a fashion icon, but the Vivienne Westwood mess of a dress and those blue heels looked sloppy but anyway, it’s quite simple, and if you’re scared to look like you’ve just stepped out of a clown car, remember this, get a simple dress, not too much detail, glitter beading etc but go ALL out on the shoes! Get something insanely stylish funky gorgeous and try to suffer through the pain, because lets face it, when have YOU ever bought a pair that managed to look hot and be comfortable? Cause if you did, please tell me:(!

Don’t fret, you don’t need to go to Christian Louboutin, because not every average joe can splurge on a pair of $600 shoes, visit Topshop or River Island or go on-line and check out Zappos, you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for! Remember you don’t have to be in a dress to follow this trend, go ahead and find a pair of flats along with jeans or tights, it’ll look just as stylish;) Embrace this trend, it’s fabulous!!!

So do you remember my post bout harem pants? I mentioned they need to be a certain quality matched with the perfect top etc, well today I went into Topshop in Avenues shopping centre (Kuwait) and as soon as you enter there are black harem pants hanging so I decided to give it a shot, and I loved them! The material is stretch so it’s superbly comfortable, there is a big bow on the left and there are zippers near the leg, they are so cute!

Harem pants from Topshop

I was hesitant to purchase them cause I got myself a butt and they tend to make the butt a bit bigger but then I found a pair of shoes that I fell in love with too (I fall in love a lot with clothes and shoes) they are black and gold, I love that the gold is minimal but still visible. The pants matched together with heels pulled my posture upright as heels do!

I loved the top I was wearing (not very clear here) it was loose and had a pocket on the right with a fake zipper, very chic but it was 18KD and I thought since I’m going to Australia soon, I’d better stick to buying a top from there since it’ll probably be a whole lot cheaper and it’s not very hard to find one that will look good, unlike the pants.

The thing I recommend if anyone wants to buy these pants is to match it with a light coloured top, avoid black, navy, grey and go for red yellow green purple etc. The pants are 24KD and the fabulous shoes (on left) are 37KD.

When it comes to jewellery I really love the look of stacked bracelets and bangles, it can completely lift a simple outfit while adding really great style, and at a very low cost too! You have to be careful when it comes to stacking your lovely bangles on because colour, pattern and the amount of “bling” can make or break the look you’re going for.

Celebs embracing stacked bangles!

I really love the understated look especially when it comes to parties; I love accessories so when I had a party to go to a few weeks back, I bought this gorgeous one shoulder deep purple dress from Al Raya Complex in Kuwait but the dress was so simple (just how I like it) and I needed to glam it up a bit while still maintaining the classy look I was going for so I popped over to Aldo and found a set of awesome stacked up bracelet/bangles (for 4KD pictured bottom right) that went perfectly with my outfit, but like I said depending on the time of day and outfit you can’t just wear any odd thing on your arms!

Stacked bangles from Aldo

Now, there are two ways to decide on what bangles match; if you have the patience to buy a whole bunch of different colours and patterns like I did from Diva (In Australia) you can have the freedom to mix and match between all the different ones you have, you can even add a simple bracelet with a charm dangling down between the bangles but if you don’t trust yourself or just can’t be bothered, there are so many stores which sell them already stacked together in all different colours, coordinated depending on the look you are trying to achieve from Aldo, Forever 21, Monsoon, EXPRESS, Diva (for those in Australia) etc!

The only thing about these gorgeously chic accessories is to always keep in mind to keep everything else to a minimum because you don’t want anything else to take away from your fashion statement. One more thing, please don’t be scared to try it out, fashion is all about having fun and experimenting what looks good on you and what doesn’t! So have fun with it and enjoy!

Layer it on November 10, 2010

I am obsessed with winter fashion! It is so much more sophisticated than summer clothes where it can get so hot and sticky you would rather be taking things off than layering clothes on! The secret to get the ultimate winter fashion look is layering; now this is not an invitation to get every possible thing in your wardrobe pack it on and leave the house with a misguided sense that that is fashion, instead, stick to two pieces on top (excluding your thermal, and your coat).

Celebrities embracing the layering trend

I bought a dark grey sleeveless knit cardigen a long time ago from a store in Australia called Valleygirl, and underneath it I wore a long sleeve dusty pink top that has a few buttons on the sleeve for a little something extra and tied it all together with a dusty pink and black beltwith black tights and my favourite winter boots from ALDO (See my post about them “Winter has come again”). This look is understated and classy, I didn’t need to wear a coat with it because it wasn’t that cold. It’s really important to stick to the same colour tones if you’re going for something classy and chic, don’t get me wrong I am no fan of matching I think that looks hidious, but instead try to stick to the same colour palette.

Girly skirted coat from Topshop

I found this absaloutley gorgeous coat at Topshop (pictured left) that I could not resist and bought it home with me, it’s hanging in my wardrobe as we speak! It’s double  buttoned and the material feels very soft which is something I look for because anything in wool irritates my skin. It doesn’t matter what you have going on underneath and you don’t need to match the coat.

Belts are another must have if you’re looking to layer because you don’t want your clothes to just hang off you and it also sinches in the waist, and what girl doesn’t want to empahasise a smaller waist?  It can be in any size so go for it!

Another cute & gorgeous trend this season are the winter knitted beret hats. I bought myself one from Forever 21 in red to wear with my coat because it adds an amazing pop of colour whilst maintaining a chic winter look. You can find these anywhere but be sure to check out the collection at Forever 21 because they’re cheap & come in many colours.

Basic infinity scarves

An absaloute essential in winter are scarves, so why not wear them in style too? There are so many ways to wear scarves but don’t feel like you are restricted, experiment and see what looks best on you and what look you are going for. A new trend in this essential winter item is available to us now known  as infinity scarves. Infinity scarves are basically a loop of material with no ends that you can wrap around tight or keep as loose as you want. There are so many different colours and patterns available you can rest assured you will manage to find one to suit your outfit.

Don’t forget that just because it’s winter you can’t wear flattering skirts and dresses while still embracing the trend, in fact, dresses offer you the opportunity to be the most fashion forward. I bought a great Armani Exchange black gold and green dress I am yet to wear for winter, even though the fabric is soft, I would layer it with a great pair of black stockings H&M have a huge range from plain to patterned and a fantastic pair of ankle boots with your coat on top to keep warm.

So don’t forget to embrace the winter season ahead and don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures styles and colours! If you have a favourite winter trend please share, I’d love to hear it!
